Stella Nolasco Spring 2015
I don't understand why Stella Nolasco's design is described by the press as edgy and that she "earned a reputation as Puerto Rico's most avant garde designer". Her fashion show for Spring Summer 2015 at New York Fashion Week felt ethereal with soft pastel colors painting a romantic rainbow on the catwalk. I saw gracious silhouettes in greens, blues and corals, elegant and sophisticated with metallic nuances on their dresses and even on their make-up. To top it all off their hair was made up in magnificent crown braids.
The first dress, which had traditional big flowers prints with a metallic twist, was followed by lots of sequins and then a series of declinations in copper, a dress, shorts and a jumpsuit! Numerous dresses had open backs, a very pleasant touch in my opinion. It reminded me of a post by blogger Garance Doré on how gorgeous but hard to wear this look can be.
Some dresses had bold shapes, with daring cut outs on the sides, such as two triangles joining at the belly button. Another dress gave the model a mermaid look with white lace on the top and a metallic tail. My favorite look was very short shorts in silk printed with these metallic flowers and worn with a simple and geometrical creamy top. Beautiful!
Whoopi Goldberg was there as well as sisters Miriam and Olivia Nervo and they seemed to love the show. Whoopi had a big smile and Olivia could not stop taking pictures. I met with singer Calma Carmona, a friend of Stella from Puerto Rico who is also a fan of her modern vision. She confirmed that Stella Nolasco had an edgy style, and that she enjoyed her work. Stella also paints, and had an exhibition, "Las sombras de una mujer" at a recognized art gallery. Her paintings were all vibrant with red and black. Perhaps Stella was too shy to show this side of her personality through her clothing designs, and wanted to appear well behaved in New York City. Overall, I was enthralled by all the pale and lovely dresses, and, I can vouch for the success of Stella Nolasco’s design career!
